Engineers vs. Communication

I have conducted a survey using social media to three engineers that I know. I have asked them about communication problems that they often encounter in their workplace. Franz Rouelle Escalera and Dave Bertiz are both civil engineers, while Ericka Vistan is a graduate of Electrical engineering.

Analyzing their responds, they all consider:

  1. Non-verbal feedback from the clients
  2. Jargon
  3. Poor self-confidence
  4. Close-mindedness and existence of different opinion and beliefs
  5. Poor language proficiency specifically in English

Take a step

Here are various practices that you may perform to overcome problems in communication:

Know your clients background – certainly people’s background affects their perception towards life as well as their opinion and belief. As professionals, engineers must be responsible for mastering the knack of being “right” without being offensive.

Be open to new ideas – Superior and control freak behavior shows discrimination to the one you are talking to. Consider yourself as a glass that still has a space to fill in. one should not put the decision to her/himself only, instead, he/she must promote teamwork and coordination.

Avoid Jargon-In communication with non-colleagues, technical terms or jargon should be explain in the way that the people you are talking to can understand. Outstanding verbal ability is not measured by using highfalutin words, but the capability to deliver the message clearly. “express not impress”

Educate yourself-Being a good communicator is a skill that needs a continuous practice to lessen the errors committed while talking or writing. Level of education should not be taken for granted, because it is a tool that could help an individual improve his or her language proficiency. Illiteracy degrade the competency of an engineer in global settings. That is why English should be thoroughly practice day-today particularly at workplace.

Spread positive vibes-“first impression last”, people wouldn’t want to talk to someone who makes them feel negative. This could be done by conditioning your thoughts before speaking to clients. In some cases, regulating your non-verbal communication is necessary. This includes; tone of voice (vocalics), facial expression (pictics), eye contact (oculesics), proper clothing, and gestures.Arrive early-You would not want your clients to wait, arriving early show your responsibility, discipline, and also your eagerness.

Show your confidence-Poor self-confidence also plays a huge part in hindering the proper flow of information, with this receivers could develop trust issues about the capability of an engineer. It is also an evident behavior, when somethings going on with your mind, you cannot deliver your thoughts properly.

Speaking of Speaking

“PERFECTION”, this is such an expensive word. Well, it’s not something that you could just buy from the supermarket or wish from a meteor shower. Perfection may sound supreme, but just like the saying goes “practice makes perfect”. What makes something imperfect is the ignorance or the inability to notice what makes an action false.

Humans exist in groups where they need each one of them in order to perform a specific task. Due to this, they need an effective communication to give and take information, ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Imagine not being able to talk, how could you tell everyone that you might seems fine but deep inside you are bleeding. Language are powerful, because every words you say might change the flow of event.

Currently, the means of survival is by getting a job. Where service is used in exchange for money. Being an Engineer requires extensive studies to be attain certain professionalism. They do not only builds machines, buildings, wiring and other public works. Moreover, they are responsible for building good relationship with their clients through constant quality communication.
